How can you encourage a child to assume responsibility? Here are a few suggestions:

* Let her do things for herself whenever possible. It may take longer for her to dress herself, and you may have to help out, but you can take these factors into consideration and allow her extra time to try.

* Expect her to take responsibility around the house, as she is able. Even very young children can help set the table. Older children can clear dishes, empty wastebaskets and recycle newspapers.

* Try to learn to accept her less-than-perfect job, rather than doing it yourself because it’s easier and faster. Little ones can help fold clean clothes and put them away. The helping is more important than the neatness when they are learning a new skill.

* Enlist her assistance whenever you’re doing something she could help with. Helping to put away groceries can be a time-saver for parents – and helps the child feel she is needed.

* When you ask her to learn a new job, break it down into small steps at which she can be successful. When folding the laundry, start with sorting – socks in this pile, washcloths in that pile, towels here, shirts there. Then move on to folding. And eventually she can learn to put each item in its place.

* Try to be patient and try not to push her beyond her present capabilities.
